20 Journal Prompts for Mental Health

Chris Maxwell · October 24, 2023

Ten Bulls journal prompts for mental health. Check in with yourself each day with these powerful questions.

Do you pay much attention to the dialogue within? What kind of conversations do you have with yourself? Are they calm, or chaotic? Are you kind to yourself, or habitually mean and destructive?

When was the last time you asked, “How am I?”

Most of us feel too busy to check in with ourselves, and ignore all the cries for help from within. We think we can drown them out with more stimulation and more work, but slowing down and journaling is an important practice that can improve our mental health significantly.

The following journal prompts for mental health will bring your focus inwards and give you a few (much needed) moments to listen and learn. Instead of worrying about everything and everyone else, for the next 10 minutes, you’re going to have a calm and caring conversation with… you.

Mental health journal prompts

Before you start to journal, it helps to take a few deep breaths and find your center. This is your time so clear away the distractions and allow yourself to relax. When you feel ready, pick up your pen, open your journal and answer any one, or all of the following questions:

  1. How am I?
  2. Did I have a good day today?
  3. Is there something I need to get off my chest?
  4. Is there something that’s been bothering me for a while now?
  5. Am I taking care of myself? How?
  6. What positive feelings did I experience today?
  7. What am I grateful for today?
  8. What did I learn today?
  9. Who helped me today? In what way?
  10. Who did I help today? In what way?

Positive changes journal prompts

You may discover that you need to change a few things in your life. Maybe you’re too hard on yourself. Maybe you’re exhausted from burning the candle at both ends. Maybe you’re consuming too much sugar and it’s affecting your moods. These questions are focussed on making small changes that can improve your mental health over the long term:

  1. What’s my most destructive habit?
  2. What would be a healthier alternative?
  3. What is at the root of my stress, anxiety, unhappiness?
  4. What can I do to reduce/remove/replace this?
  5. What one thing can I do today to take better care of myself?
  6. What one thing can I do today to improve my energy and outlook?
  7. List 10 words and phrases that make me feel happy, positive, energetic.
  8. List 10 activities that fill me with joy, playfulness and enjoyment.
  9. List 25 songs that make me feel alive, then make a playlist.
  10. What time will I exercise, meditate and journal today?
